Well Diego has arrived, jet lagged, grumpy, and ready to work – no seriously- work…. those puritans really messed up our priorities in the US.
Any who, we headed down for a quick walk around the neighborhood with Diego, and somehow stumbled upon a national holiday and a communist one at that (sorry, maybe it was socialist too). It’s May Day – Duh – labor unions and riled up folks wearing the hammer and sickle around the world are marching through the streets to show their solidarity for the common worker – or something like that. So, as it often seems to be the case when walking around the streets of Europe, we stumbled upon a demonstration resplendent with pictures of Che, Fidel, and a Hammer and Sickle in the Superman insignia.
As we walked away from the demonstration/parade route, we ducked into the Barcelona Cathedral – which was gorgeous. This is the first Spanish cathedral I have been in, and the architecture, artwork, and overall sense of space inside is very different than the heavy-handed ornateness of Italian cathedrals. The center cloister is an atrium filled with palm trees as high as the top of the cathedral spires, with coy ponds and ducks sunning themselves in the morning light.
If you get the occasion to take a sleep deprived Diego to see “Old Cool Stuff” you should do it, it was like watching a kid in a cultural candy store
We headed back to the apartment and made a breakfast of omelets, sausage, chocolate croissants, bread, fresh OJ, café con leche, yogurt and cheese – and then proceeded to siesta until 7pm. We headed down to the wharf to the Restaurant Peru and ate our first real paella and drank wine until midnight.
