Today Ulises picked up a scooter for a two-day rental, and we set off to explore the entire island. Starting at the Butterfly Valley (which was of course closed) and combing the shores of the island until we found a nice shady beach to spend a few hours on before we set off to explore the countryside.
We set up at Golden Beach, on the southeastern coast of Paros. We spent our hours reading, napping, wading into the slightly chilly Aegean and trying not to slip on the volcanic rock, and of course people watching. So far we have found that overwhelmingly the French are out and on vacation in the Greek Islands. Families, retirees, kids, everyone is speaking French, and for some reason, all of them like to sit right next to us on a completely empty beach. We waste away the day sitting on the beach and decide to head out towards the inland portion of the island.
It is quite a change to go from the coastal views of whitewashed cities all oriented around a small solitary beach, to the interior views of homes built for raising sheep, goats, and cattle, with olive groves and vineyards interspersed among run down shacks or immaculate luxury homes. Goats and Sheep and Mountains oh my!
We cut back to the city and head to Parika, and to a much-needed shower, arriving just in time to catch a hazy sunset over the coast.
