Today we checked out of our hotel and wasted away several hours (some on the beach and some at the port playing Gin Rummy into the thousands of points) before we climbed on the Hydrofoil (called a Flycat) to Heraklion Crete. We got in just before sunset and went on a short walkabout after checking into our hotel.
It is quite a change from Perissa, far more industrial of a city and a large city at that. The entire port entry of Heraklion is encircled by a wall and fortified towers built by the Venetians when they held Crete as one of their southernmost port territories. There are traces of old walls and armories everywhere, some with great care taken to preserve them, and others falling into complete ruin.
Tomorrow we are on our way to visit Knossos, home of the Minotaur, that’s right – bull men!
