Today we had a Big Delicious American Breakfast Buffet (or at least that is what was advertised on the sign for breakfast), it was pretty good, and I can’t really argue with any place that provides me with bottomless coffee (particularly the real stuff, not that nescrappe).
We decided to head out on a walk around the old city walls of Rhodes, the ancient city is enclosed by a fortified wall, and in some places, with three fortified walls, one of which is the outermost barrier to a moat used to further fortify the city. Apparently Rhodes needed all of this fortification, as the Venetians, Ottomans, Knights of St. John, the Italians, the Germans, and finally the Greeks all conquered and claimed this city at one time or another. Inside of the city walls lies the largest currently inhabited medieval town in the world, and it is truly beautiful – almost so well preserved it seems manufactured.
We stopped to have a coffee at a little garden cafĂ©, and ended up eating fruit salads, milkshakes and sodas to fortify us for a trip to the museum…off to the old city and to the Rhodes Archeology Museum.
We lucked out as it is the First Sunday of the Month, and the museum was a freebee; it was a beautiful museum, built in the former hospital of the Knights of Saint John. It was truly spooky and medieval with oddly placed shafts of sunlight illuminating a multitude of stone figures, columns, and carvings – which made the whole place seem like the after picture from a dinner party hosted by Medusa…it was cool.
We wandered from room to room until the guards finally kicked us out at 3pm – and decided to walk over to grab a bite to eat at the “Chicken Stories” restaurant – yup that’s the name. I had the hot wings (odd, but good) and Ulises had the Chicken Mexican which consisted of Doritos and chicken in a pita bread with a mixture of salsa, mayo and Dijon mustard. Nothing Mexican about it, but pretty good nonetheless.
We spent the evening walking around the city and visiting the shore packed with tourists sunbathing on the windy beaches, the street known as “Bar Street” where each nationality has its own bar to frequent (not sure if pirates are a nationality, but they have a bar too), and the infamous “Colorado Center” a grimy tri-level night club that for some reason is named after one of my favorite states.
We rounded out our evening by grabbing dinner at the Restaurant Kostas, a great little family run restaurant where as a thanks for eating there we got two little mini bottles of ouzo – which we used to toast our great stay in Greece, we have truly loved it.
I can’t wait to come back!
Tomorrow it’s a ferry to Turkey, that’s right Gobble Gobble.
